Recently, I’ve been going over the music in my iTunes library, deleting stuff, adding other artists, etc. The biggest casualty of my music library has been Kanye West. For a brief period of time, I convinced myself I enjoyed his music because my friends did. I remember trying to listen to his arrogant rapping and acceptable beats and see something beyond the typical, self indulgence of modern rap music. For a period of time, I actually believed there was something more than what scratched the surface. Well, as of yesterday, I finally cut all ties with Mr. West’s music. I deleted everything I had of his from my library. The main reason: I never listened to it. Sure, I had some plays here and there a few years ago. Considering I’ve had his first two albums in my library for nearly 4 years now, I listened to him a total of 46 times? That’s not really impressive…especially when you consider the last time I actually listened to him was nearly 2 years ago, and the last time I actually listened to his music without another person picking it from my iTunes, was nearly 3 years ago. Yeah…
So, I’m not saying other people shouldn’t listen to him. Sure, if you like that kind of stuff, by all means, enjoy his popish, sell-out beats, stuck-up lyrics and general arrogance. See, to an extent, I like that kind of music. Don’t get me wrong, arrogant musicians are a lot of fun! Pop swill can be really catchy and sooo much fun to dance to. For me though, I do not enjoy dressed up crap. Kanye West parades around like a top tier musician, a great lyricist and a voice of a generation. In his mind, and in the mind of a lot of his fans, he is the greatest thing since The Chronic. Um….I’m not a rap expert, but that seems a bit far fetched. Anyways, whatever. I do not want to start a music war here…I just don’t enjoy his stuff and acted accordingly (finally).
I seriously have too much other music to have my iTunes be bogged down with stuff I don’t listen to. I currently have in my library, 9909 songs, and have around 3,000 more to add from my external hard-drive. Good times!
In other news: The Decemberists. Despite the fact that I’ve listened to them a bunch, I still find them rather boring. Well until the new album, Hazards of Love. That album is rather brilliant, but the other stuff puts me to sleep. The irony of that statement is their music is often up-beat and musically complex…I just find most of the songs to be a tad dull. It just seems like each time I listen to a song, I’ve heard it before…and I tend to get more unimpressed each time. Sigh. Basically, I’ll give The Decemberists a whirl from time to time now, but I can’t stand listening to an album all the way through anymore…with the exception of Hazards Of Love.
Okay, more later!
